Japanese PM Yoshihide Suga, man of political sincerity

Japanese PM Yoshihide Suga, man of political sincerity That is how the senior political leaders of so-called big political parties should have done and should do in future the way the Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has done saying that he would step down, setting the stage for a new premier after a one-year tenure marred by an unpopular COVID-19 response and rapidly dwindling public support. Suga, who took over after Shinzo Abe resigned last September, citing ill health, has seen his support ratings sink to below 30% as the nation struggles with its worst wave of COVID-19 infections ahead of a general election this year. Suga's decision on Friday not to run in a ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) election in September means the party will choose a new leader, who will become prime minister. Do our senior leaders have the sense of responsibility of sincerely serving the nation and the people and feeling of resigning on the other hand from PM’s position if failed...

Maternity hospitals

The Himalayan Times 2 September 2021 Maternity hospitals Nepal used to have one of the finest health delivery systems among the South Asian countries. The decision to establish sub health posts and health posts in all the then Village Development Committee (VDC) back in the 1970s was an extraordinary decision of the then government. Putting health personnel in all these health posts to serve the rural people at their door steps was challenging, however, they were successfully assigned and had started providing basic health services to the rural population.  In each health post, a combination of health staff such as the Auxiliary Health Worker (AHW) at the sub-health post land Health Worker (HW) at the health post lever together with the Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) made up an excellent team of qualified health human resources. They provided basic health services to the visiting patients in a professional manner. Medicines, as authorized by the government, were made ...

Corrupt ministers

The Himalayan Times 26 August 2021 Corrupt ministers Many counties, rich and poor, in the world including Nepal, are desperately struggling to contain the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Millions of people have been infected and many have lost their lives in the first and second wave of the pandemic around the globe. Now, the World Health Organization (WHO) foresees a possible third wave of the pandemic in many parts of the world and recommends the governments to be fully prepared for it. Soon after the production of vaccines in the USA, the UK, Russia and China, governments around the globe were optimistic of getting the vaccines on time so that they would be able to keep their people safe from the pandemic. However, easy access of vaccines throughout the world has not been easy because of the excessive demands for the vaccines, creating panic among governments and their people. This situation allowed unscrupulous and corrupt ministers and bureaucrats in some countries l...

DEUBA’S CHALLENGE

The Kathmandu Post 11 June 2017 DEUBA’S CHALLENGE   Sher Bahadur Deuba’s patience for the last 12 years to become the Prime Minister for the fourth time has finally borne fruit (“Deuba elected PM for fourth time” June 7, Page 1). His previous premiership remains controversial- he was removed twice from his premiership by the then King Gyanendra citing incompetency. He was also criticized for registering impeachment motion against Chief Justice Sushila Karki.  Many challenges lie ahead for him and his government, particularly holding three levels of elections and amending the constitution to bring disgruntled Madhes based parties on board. Developing effective local governance by empowering elected local bodies, expediting reconstruction of the earthquake ravaged structures and providing relief to the quake victims, attracting foreign and national investors and concluding the transitional phase will remain other major challenges for his government. Maintaini...

Downfall of Afghan government

The Himalayan Times 19 August 2021 Downfall of Afghan government The recent shocking political development in Afghanistan, a member of the South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries, has sent a huge political wave across the region and other parts of the globe. The external political interference in Afghanistan that started back in 2001, citing the role of al-Qaeda led by Osama Bin Laden in destroying the twin towers in the United State of America (USA), has been the main cause of political instability, and now the sudden downfall of the Afghan government following the departure of U.S forces “America's longest war: 20 years of missteps in Afghanistan! (THT, August 16, Page 1).  In fact, with the intention of taking revenge, the U.S government had toppled the Taliban government, which was blamed for sheltering and hosting al-Queda militants responsible for the 2001 hijacked plane attacks in New York. The decision of the Biden administration to pull ...

Disgusting political drama

The Himalayan Times 12 August 2021 Disgusting political drama The on-going political drama between the two factions of the CPN-UML for the last one-and-a-half years has been the most disgusting and unwanted political event in the country’s political history. The factions led by K.P.Oli and Madhav-Khanal continue to blame each other for the on-going political mess and even for unseating the then NCP’s almost two-thirds majority government. The then Oli-led government was widely criticized for its ministers’ heavy involvement in corruption cases while purchasing medical equipment and vaccines and failure in managing the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in the untimely deaths of thousands of people.   The second-rung leaders of these two factions continue putting in efforts to convince Oli and Nepal to reconcile ditching their personal and political indifference for the sake of party unity “Nepal-Khanal faction keen of UML unity” (THT, August 6, Page 1). A few days ago, a 10-...

NEVER ENDING PEACE AND LOVE

NEVER ENDING PEACE AND LOVE Have you ever heard somebody interestingly interpreting the real meaning of NEPAL? N STANDS FOR NEVER E FOR ENDING P FOR PEACE A FOR AND L LOVE NEPAL: NEVER ENDING PEACE AND LOVE Whoever named NEPAL might have seriously and intelligently thought about the real meaning behind it. However, the destructive politics practiced by the senior political leaders and their parties in the name of democracy for the last three decades has badly damaged the national image in the international arena and almost destroyed the century old existence of multi-cultural, multi-religious and multi-ethnicity civilization among the people harmoniously living together for centuries.   Nepal was never colonized and remained proudly a sovereign nation throughout its historical inception in the globe. But, it is now sad to see and say that the country has been made a political play-ground of the foreign powers because of the insensible and irresponsible pol...
