Is Parliamentary Democracy and Multi-party System Alive?

The 10 points agreement between the two factions of UML came into the public just day before the scheduled date of the Supreme Court’s final verdict to come on the HoR dissolution. Was there any speculation from both the factions that the verdict would come in favour of dissolution? But, the verdict went against the HoR dissolution “Supreme Court reinstates House, issues verdict in favour of Deuba's claim” (THT Online July 12, Page 1). That must be a huge political blow to the Oli faction and may create massive street protests in the coming days creating more political chaos in the nation. However, did not the SC’s verdict directing the president to appoint Deuba as the new PM seem to be against the parliament democracy and multiparty system?

It was the outcome of marathon deliberations between Oli and Madhav-Khanal factions of the UML to come to 10 points agreement “UML taskforce finally strikes a ten-point agreement” (THT, July 12, Page 1). But, for what purpose they were motivated to do so? Was it for the nation and the people who are having hard time for the past one and half years due to life threatening COVID-19 pandemic or for their own political benefits? Was it simply a political drama to distract the people’s issues and concerns over the sluggish management of the government? There could be many questions raised about their unproductive politics they played in the past.

However, what expectations can be expected from the next coalition government under Deuba leadership? Will his government have a magic stick that can do miracle in the next one and half years? Are there any superb plan and program with him to put forward to prove himself as the most suitable leader to lead the nation? Is he not a tested prime minister who had completely failed to lead the nation and hold the elections? Having said this, there seems to be no option for the opposition alliance to push Deuba as the next PM to replace Oli whose government was widely criticized for poor handling of the COVID-19.

It remains to be seen whether the Deuba led coalition government will be able to address the need of the hour and the growing dissatisfaction of the majority population.
