Mahabir Pun- an extraordinary personality

Dr. Mahabir Pun is a well-known social entrepreneur, educator, and activist. He is famous for his ground-breaking work in bringing technology and education to rural populations of the hilly areas of his home village Nangi and surrounding villages in Myagdi district.



 Some of his unmatched establishments and achievements to put him in fame:

  • Established the first wireless network in the hilly rural areas: In 2002, he set up a wireless network to connect remote villages in the Himalayas, providing internet access and bridging the digital divide.
  • Founded the Nepal Wireless Networking Project: This project aimed to bring technology and education to rural Nepal, promoting digital literacy and socio-economic development.
  •  Introduced e-learning and telemedicine: His initiatives enabled remote villages to access online educational resources and healthcare services, improving lives and opportunities.
  •  Empowered rural communities: Through his work, Pun has empowered rural communities, especially women and children, by providing access to information, education, and economic opportunities.
  •  International recognition: He has received numerous awards and recognition for his innovative work, including the Magsaysay Award (2007), Ramon Magsaysay Award (2014), and Ashoka Fellowship

Mahabir Pun's selfless dedication to bridging the digital divide and promoting education in rural villages has made him a celebrated figure globally. His five months education minister in the interim government and winning the parliamentarian seat for the House of Representative as an independent candidate from his home district remained to be other milestones in his endeavour to serve the nation and the people.
