INGO WATCH

The Kathmandu Post 27 July 2012 I t was good to know that the government finally decided to bring the funding system of INGOs under the purview of the Ministry of Finance, but it should have been done long ago (“Govt set to bring INGOs under MoF purview” July 25, Money 1) . This process will definitely help the government to directly monitor INGOs’ funding sources in and outside Nepal, but program budgeting and budget spending should also be closely watched to ensure the quality implementation and achievement of such development programs. Who knows?

Looking closely at the on-going fragile political situation of Nepal created by the major political parties, it seems that the post second Jana Andolan achievement may get slipped out of our hands sooner or later. They completely failed to draft new constitution in the last four years. What a shame act was this for them? They are still continuing to show their power hunger attitudes even at this politically fragile situation. Nepal is passing politically through an extremely difficult time. Every common people seem nervous and continue to express their dismay and dissatisfaction over the current political uncertainty and insecurity. It is very sad and unfortunate to see the major political parties still continuing to engage in power and blame games leaving the national agenda aside. They never seemed bothered about the national interest and the hard lives the general people are passing through for a long time. They simply are seen engaged in their own petty political intere...

PUSH AND PULL

The Kathmandu Post 13 July 2012 Prashant Jha’s article clearly portrays the crux of the current political problem and puts forward much needed political solutions (“Preserving the agenda” July 11, Page 6) . Why do NC and UML and other fringe parties continue to muddle the political atmosphere by asking PM to resign without any valid reasons? What a childish act is this? The on-going political situation has been result of the tug of war between the parties with the end result being nation being pulled into political turmoil. If they continue to act irresponsibly, the chances of materializing the post Second Jana Andolan achievements seem dismal. Rai Biren Bnagdel Maharajgunj, Kathmandu .  on line jobs

Degrading national sovereignty

The Himalayan Times 24 June 2012 Degrading national sovereignty It was good to know that the newly formed CPN-M seemed worrying over degrading national sovereignty and national independence, as  reported in “ CPM-N worries over degrading sovereignty” (THT, June 27, Page 5), at this time when the nation is passing through politically precarious situation due to political uncertainty and political polarization among the political parties. It is very sad and unfortunate to see them still continuing to engage in power and blame games leaving the national agenda aside. They never seemed bothered about the national interest and the hard lives the general people are passing through for a long time. They simply are seen engaged in their own petty political interests. How long the nation and its people are to suffer with these so called senior leaders’ gross negligence, irresponsible and immoral acts? While having informal chat recently with an old man whom I had met with in one of...

Encouraging news report

The Himalayan Times 26 June 2012 It seems that the Rautes will likely be facilitated to enjoy healthy life-style in the coming days after reading the news report “Non-formal education demanded for Rautes” (THT, June 19, Page 2). It was really exciting to know that the Raute Utthan Parishd (RUP), which is dedicated to preserving the culture of Rautes, an endangered   life-style through the use of audio-visual aid and other non-formal education methods. RUP deserves sincere appreciation for this effort. My working experiences with the rural communities remind me of miracle changes occurred in their unhealthy living conditions with concerted effort using various social empowerment tools. It is possible through commitment and dedication. Several illiterate women groups in the remote villages of Dolakha and Ramechhap districts had successfully completed adult literacy classes and other non-formal education. They had initiated abd successfully implemented several healt...

NO OTHER ALTERNATIVE

The Kathmandu Post 24 June 2012 It was encouraging to read about politicians talking at a time when the situation seems so shaky (“First time after CA demise, 4 parties sit for consensus talks” June 21, 2012 ). Blame and power games for the last four years resulted in the demise of Constitutional Assembly, The political and constitutional crisis should be solved at the earliest, and there is no alternative to consensus. If our politicians don’t act responsibly, it might be too late for them to keep the crisis from deteriorating. If that happens, the chances of saving the gains of second Jana Andolan and the CA are dismal.  Rai Biren Bangdel Mahrajgunj, Kathmandu on line jobs

Not to be tolerated

The Himalayan Times 15 June 2012 The decision of the incumbent caretaker government led by Dr. Babruram Bhattarai (BRB) to provide lifelong perks and benefits and other facilities to VIPS including former prime ministers, Chief Justices, former speakers and home ministers from the state coffer has drawn people’s concern. What good reasons forced him to take such unpopular and unwise decision at a time when he himself is merely a care taker Prime Minister? Why he decided to attack on the state coffer when the country is economically bleeding with billions of money incurred on the recently dead Constitution Assembly (CA)? Was he thinking for himself after he becomes ex-PM? Was not it the indication of poor mentality of such a learned man? It was not surprising to see Mohan Baidya faction staging protest against the government’s decision as reported in “Misuse of state coffers” (THT, June 12, Page2) and threatening to continue their protest if the government did not roll back ...

Possible options

The Himalayan Times 30 May 2012   Oppositions have already started warning of uprising against the unilateral move of the government for calling fresh elections as reported in “Oppn warns of uprising against unilateral move (THT, May 16, Page 1). Keeping these in mind, there could be two possible options to avoid political confrontations and create favourable political environment for giving the political parties a safe passage to correct their political blunders and for their political existence at this critical juncture. The first option could be to have a round table discussion among all the stakeholders including the royalsits and come to a consensus to revive the 2046/47 constitution with necessary amendments in line with the changed political contexts and go for the fresh general election to get fresh mandate of the sovereign people. If this was agreed, it could tremendously save billion of rupees from the state coffers and avoid political confrontations and un...
