Where does Nepal stand?

The Himalayan Times 7 April 2022 Where does Nepal stand? Blame goes to COVID -19 pandemic for the financial woes of many countries, and some of them are in a critical situation. Among them is Sri Lanka, which is passing through a disastrous situation financially. Was COVID-19 really to blame or are there other factors as well? Is it bad governance of the ruling party led by Gotabaya Rajapaksa or the accrual of the mismanagement of past governments? It remains to be seen how the Sri Lankan government will resolve this crisis amidst dozens of lawmakers quitting ruling coalition “Dozens of lawmakers quit ruling coalition as Sri Lanka crisis deepens” (THT, April 5, Page 3). www.nepalitics.com I am not so sure if Nepal will have to face a situation similar to that of Sri Lanka, but I can guess the day is not too far considering handling of state affairs by the federal government in an irresponsible way. Government past and the present don’t seem to be putting much effort on in...

Stop deceiving voters

The Himalayan Times 31 March 2022 Stop deceiving voters Starting an opinion with a negative connotation about our political parties and their leaders may not sound good and palatable, but I think, it is my responsibility, as a citizen journalist, to present the ground reality about the effect of false promises made by the them during the elections and complete failure of fulfilling such promises by their respective governments in the past. I have nothing against political parties having their own political principles and philosophies. However, the way they make rosy and false promises to their voters during the elections should now stop instead become sincere in putting forward relevant, realistic and doable political manifestos and implement them accordingly. Having said these, it remains to be seen how the major political parties put forward their political manifestos for the upcoming local level election which is just one and half months away. As compared to the previo...

Ensure voting rights

The Himalayan Times 24 March 2022 Ensure voting rights Following the promulgation of constitution in 2072 B.S, three tyres of elections were held to elect people’s representatives for the local, provincial and federal levels of governments under the federal structures. People had enthusiastically participated at all the election level with high hopes of seeing political stability in the country and ultimately a peaceful and prosperous country. Now, the people seem to be losing hope of seeing a stable government and prosperous nation after the almost two-thirds majority government of the then Nepal Communist Party could not complete its five-year term owing to its internal political feud and self-centred politics of the senior leaders. The second general elections of the local level governments are scheduled to take place on May 13 of this year. Major parties, especially the coalition partners of the Deuba-led government, have started looking around for options to get thei...

Unhealthy criticism

The Himalayan Times 17 March 2022 Unhealthy criticism It is not unusual to see leaders of different political parties blaming each other to attract voters towards their side when the date for the local level elections starts approaching nearer. They leave no stone unturned to expose all the dark political activities of their rival leaders during their election campaigns. They do not care about their own moral responsibility to behave wisely and respect the election code of conduct. Rather, they start behaving as if only they are sincere, committed and nationalists, making false promises to the voters to make the nation prosperous and relieve them of their difficulties and hardships. The government has recently announced May 13 for the local level elections in a single phase as per the recommendation of the Election Commission (EC). The major political parties have started preparing their political strategies for it. The five-party coalition partners of the Deuba-led governm...

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTES OF THE DAY

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTES OF THE DAY    You’re so much stronger than your excuses     Don’t compare yourself to others. Be like the sun and the moon and shine when it’s your time.     Don’t Quit     Don’t tell everyone your plans, instead show them your results.

All praise for Deuba

The Himalayan Times 3March 2022 All praise for Deuba The long-time drama being played on Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), Nepal Compact has finally ended with the coalition government ratifying it with the presentation of a 12-point-interpretative declaration two days ago. The frequent House disruption by the UML and regular street protests of the fringe parties did not stop the Deuab-led government to move forward towards making the nation a semi-colonial state, as opined and claimed by fringe parties and some constitutional experts. The coming months and years will show the real impact of the MCC deal. PM Deuba seemed to have cleverly played his cards at the final moment by showing his trump-card to Prachanda and Madhav Nepal, threatening them to break up the coalition government should they object to the MCC deal in the House “Mahat all praise for Deuba” (THT, March 1. Page 2). It seemed that ratification of the MCC Nepal Compact by the House by any means was hi...

MCC deal: Yes or No

The Himalayan Times 24 February 2022 MCC deal: Yes or No There is no denial that foreign aid has played a crucial role in Nepal's overall development. Nepal has been receiving foreign aid mainly in the form of grant, loan, technical assistance and humanitarian aid since the 1950s. Since then, the volume of foreign aid in different forms continued to grow in volume depending upon the number of development projects planned and implemented in different parts of the country with the objective of uplifting the livelihood of the common people by investing in the different sectors including hydropower. With regard to bilateral support, Nepal has been receiving aid from the government of Australia, China, Denmark, Finland, Germany, India, Japan, Korea, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, the USA, and the UK. In the case of multilateral donors, Nepal has been a recipient of the Asian Development (ADB), European Union (EU), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), International Lab...

Harming judiciary supremacy

The Himalayan Times 17 February 2022 Harming judiciary supremacy Nepal continues to suffer from dirty political game played by irresponsible political parties and their senior leaders for the last several years as if the country belongs to them. They dethroned the king unconstitutionally in 2062/63 when the common people did not know that the people’s movement was nothing but a foul political game played by the same group of senior leaders to serve their own political interest.  Following the completion of three tiers of general election being held as per the constitution, the then almost two-third majority government led by K.P.Oli could not even stand for a full five-year term because of the dirty in-house political game played by his own party senior leaders. In other words, his way of running the government and the party was not palatable to his senior fellow comrades. He tried to dissolve the house twice to give lessons to his fellow comrades, which was invalida...
