Dilemma in commencing new education session


The Covid 19 has left nothing unaffected when it showed its notorious and deadly presence in November last year in Huwan province of China. Since then, millions of people have been affected and more than 6,90,000 people have lost their lives all over the globe. All the movements of the people including their creations were completely halted initially for couple of weeks due to Covid 19 pandemic. The super human beings became helpless and were confined to their homes just because of virus threat. 




Some of the ministers and experts had initially claimed that there would be no impact of this deadly virus in Nepal. However, they were wrong when one man who arrived from Wuhan in Kathmandu on 13 January 2020 was tested Covid 19 positive. The number of infected people started gradually increasing when migrant workers started entering Nepal. As a result, the government was compelled to announce immediate nationwide lockdown from 24 March, 2020. After almost 120 days, it had to decide to ease lockdown, after business groups and other people started coming out in the streets demanding government to ease lockdown, from 21 July 2020.


Among other institutions, educational institutions have been badly hit and are in dilemma when to start their academic activities. Most of the private schools are somehow conducting on line-classes for the last one month. The government has not been able to come up with any tangible and doable plan and program concerning new academic session which was supposed to be commenced from March/April. This is a complete irresponsible and insensible act of the government which was supposed to prepare such plan and programme on time in consultation with the educational experts, health professionals and schools managements. 


However, it was encouraging to know now that the Education Ministry is working on it in consultation with concerned partners for resuming schools. However, the government decision to resume schools and colleges without doing proper homework would be a mistake.

As the government rolls out plans for school to resume, the Ministry of Education is preparing to reduce prescribed study hours for the new academic year, which is yet to begin due to the Covid-19 pandemic, by around a third.

The government last week decided to allow schools to admit children from August 18 and plan to resume classes from the first week of September.

“A work plan will be out by the end of this week,” Deepak Sharma, spokesperson for the ministry, told the Post referring to the government’s decision to ask the Ministry of education to prepare plans to resume schools. “The plan will revise the number of school days required in an academic year.”
