POLITICAL THREAT

The Himalayan Times 17 February 2012 The people are not surprised to hear from Maoist Chairman Prachanda about embracing another people’s revolt if other parties tried to revive the 1990 constitution while celebrating 17 th people’s war at Khulamanch in Kathmandu as reported in “Dahal threatens revolt if 90’s constitution revived’ (THT, February 14, Page one). Was it a threat to the other political parties? Was it a threat to the common people who do not follow them? They (common people) are completely tired and exhausted of hearing about “revolt” in their own name? Other political parties have also been playing deceptive politics in the people’s name. The country is on the verge of becoming a failure state. It does not seem, looking at the on-going political situation, that the new constitution will be drafted by the deadline. Was it the reason Maoist Supremo publicly telling that they would not abide by the Supreme Court’s recent verdict on the termination of Constituent ...

POLITICAL POLARIZATION

The Himalayan Times 10 February 2012 Political polarizations among the Big Three have again surfaced due to unilateral decisions of UCPN-M led coalition government to legalize wartime transactions among others. The opposition parties, NC and UML, have vocally objected the government’s move disrupting the daily affairs of parliamentary session for the last three consecutive weeks. The government does not seem considering correcting its unilateral decisions. The irresponsible acts of the government have created confrontational political environment that could be detrimental to timely completion of both peace and new constitution drafting processes. Giving seven days ultimatum to the government by the oppositions seems a serious political threat that could be fatal to transitional period if both the oppositions and the government would remain adamant to their political egos. The oppositions, the government and the UCPN-M have to sincerely bear in mind that this is not the appropriate ...

REVOLT THREAT

The Kathmandu Post 10 February 2012   A political threat from one of the cabinet members is shocking (“Revolt brewing in Madhes: Gupta” February 8, Page Three). Why don’t not he himself and other Madhes-based ministers make any attempt to implement the past agreements while they are in political helms? For whose cause, do Madhes- based political leaders continue to threaten with political revolt? It is time for all the political parties including Madhes-based parties to leave aside their petty political interest. They have to cohesively work together to complete the people’s mandated twin tasks of peace process and constitution within the dead-line. Rai Biren Bangdel Maharjgunj, Kathmandu

Deceptive Politics

Listening to Anarsingh Karki over a FM talk program a few days ago, I was pretty nervous and had goose bumps all over my body thinking that, if he was true, we would remain no more Nepali if the Big Three continued to play deceptive politics with each other, I was fortunate to get the telephone line in the next talk program with the same FM and tell the program host to retransmit the Karki’s talk program for second time so that more Nepali would have an opportunity to hear about the intention of 12 point agreement that was signed among the then seven parties in Delhi, India almost six years ago. According to him, both NC and UML, who repeatedly claim to be the champions of democracy, had already loosened their trousers and shed their democratic skins while signing the 12 point agreement with UCPN (M) who used to claim to be against the parliamentary system. This unnatural partnership among the then seven parties was a blow to disturb the peaceful existence of sovereign Nepal and ...

Explosive situation

The Himalayan Times 27 January 2012   The coalition government continues to make irresponsible and undemocratic acts one after another undermining the democratic norms and values. Such acts have created unwanted confrontation among the major political parties in the CA who were and are supposed to be cohesively working towards the completion of peace process and drafting of new constitution by the middle of July 2012. Instead, they seem to be entangling in unnecessary verbal wars and blame games creating unhealthy political environment at such a time when they had to be spending their valuable time on timely finishing the twin tasks mandated by the people. Looking closely at the immoral political acts of senior leaders of major political parties, it seems that the Nepali people, who had blindly supported them during II Jana Andolan, continue to get suffered more and have even more difficult days ahead. Unless, the people themselves realize now and act accordingly to correct the...

PUBLIC FURY

The Kathmandu Post 27 January 2012  THE Kathmandu denizens had to forcefully observe yet another day valley closure called by 13 student unions affiliated to several political parties including Maoist against the government’s recent petrol price hike (“Tide of public fury against petro price hike, fuel shortage rises” January 25, Page one) . The general people and students throughout the country were furious over the massive price hike of petroleum products and showing their frustrations out in the streets. But I am bit surprised as to why the major political parties simply asked their sister organizations to flex their muscles. Was it simply a political ploy being staged to deceive mass population who are furious over the government’s un-friendly decisions? The opposition should have instead raised the public-related issue in the parliament, Rai Biren Bangdel Maharajgunj, Kathmandu

CRIMINAL MP

The Kathmandu Post 20 January 2012   KUDOS to the Metropolitan Police Crime Division (MPCD) for its bold step to arrest Shyam Sunder Gupta CA lawmaker, for his alleged involvement in masterminding abduction of Pawan Sanghai (“Gupta the “mastermind”, Court send him in custody” January 18, Page one) . It is hoped that this is the beginning of the long haul chase to put all real culprits behind bars, no matter what positions they hold. The MPCD should continue to show its guts to go after other high profile criminals, who are still under the protection of political parties and wandering around enjoying the fruits of the state coffer, and put them behind bars too. CA lawmakers found to be involved in such criminal acts should be immediately stripped of their entitlement. If such provisions are not in the Interim Constitution, then the constitution should be amended accordingly considering the supremacy of CA. The people are extremely frustrated seeing the criminal lawmakers go un...

Corrupt government

As I had written in both the Kathmandu Post and The Himalayan Times one week ago about the fuel crisis in Nepal, the Nepal government deceived the consumers increasing prices of petrolium products overnight. The people will definitely have hard time to cope with double digit inflation. I am not so sure how long the poor people of Republic Nepal will be able tolerate this corrupt government. It seems to me that they will have to see more difficult days ahead because of their blind support to the corrupt leaders of major political parties five years ago. Listening regulary to talk program over FM radio, people have been bold enough to ask former King to step in and save the nation. I am not surprised.
