Is door opened for new political change?

Is door opened for new political change? PM Oli decided to dissolve the HoR for the second time citing the other parties failed to form new government to replace his government. This was not his surprising political move considering his game plan for the last one year when his own comrades started cornering him for his unilateral and unconstitutional moves.    What could be expected from the new government under the premiership of other senior leaders of the major political parties? What could be the other best options for the PM other than dissolving the HoR once again? Were there not any other doable and better alternatives for the PM to save the HoR at this critical time? Would not it be better if the other parties had at-least set their egoistic politics aside during this difficult time and cooperate with Oli’s government to effectively manage the COVID-19 pandemic, let it complete five year’s term and go for the elections? It is very unfortunate to see these senio...

Adieu to Pradhan and Karki

Adieu to Pradhan and Karki It was very sad to learn the untimely death of two renowned persons, Prem Dhoj Pradhan and Chetan Karki, who dedicated their whole lives in the field of Nepali music, culture, movie and literature. Known for singing gems like ‘Ghumti ma Naau’, ‘Namana Laaj Yestari’, ‘Rajamati Kumati’, ‘Para Laijau Phool Haru’, Pradhan passed away on May 6, 2021 at the age of 82. He has left behind hundreds of melodious songs in the midst of us. I t was Pradhan who built the foundation of Nepali modern music. In his lifetime, Pradhan sang more than 700 songs. His contribution to Nepalbhasa music was also significant. He popularised many Nepalbhasa songs including, ‘Rajamati Kumati’ and ‘Wa Chhu Gali Tho Chu Gali’.   Known as a Nepali songwriter and film director, Karki died on 16 May 2021 at the age of 84. He started his writing career in the Nepali film industry by writing the script of 'Paribartan. As a writer, he has written a collection of songs, stories, a...

HoR dissolution, again?

HoR dissolution, again? It seems that Nepal, in near future, might, either take a new political course or become politically more unstable nation inviting social and political crisis by closely looking at the on-going irresponsible and insensible political activities of senior leaders of the major political parties. Oli was able to lure Madhav Nepal and Company to his side at the final hour of the President’s call for the formation of new government. He was able to give continuity to his government with the same set of ministers making the NC and the Maoist-Centro flat to their heels.    Oli has to seek Vote of Confidence (VoC) from the House of Representatives (HoR) within 30 days from the date of his appointment as the Prime Minister. Also, in accordance with the Constitution, his government is supposed to submit next year’s plan and programme at the HoR by 15 th day of Jestha of every financial year. Looking at the on-going political scenario and time constraint...

Don’t let the Health Delivery System collapse.

Don’t let the Health Delivery System collapse What a shameful and messy political drama is going on in our nation when the common people are dying in hundreds by days due to COVID-19. All the government and private hospitals are fully occupied with increasing number of COVID-19 infected patients. Senior leaders of so-called major political parties are completely engrossed in power politics rather than spending their valuable time in saving the lives of the people by collectively putting their efforts towards seeking immediate solutions to overcome the current health crisis. It seems that the existing health delivery system is about to collapse in the absence of adequate human and financial resources.   Innocent people are losing their lives due to dreadful COVID-19.   So painful to see someone losing her/his dear and near ones    More people are dying everyday due to shortages of oxygen cylinders.   Health staff waiting for to be vaccinated. However, t...

Becoming a failed state?

Becoming a failed state? The insensible and irresponsible tug-of-war for political power among the senior leaders of the then Nepal Communist Party (NCP) was a shameful political act that had made the nation and the people mere spectator for the last two years and finally that came to end after PM Oli was defeated in the HoR yesterday while seeking vote of confidence “PM Oli loses confidence vote” (THT, May 11, Page 1). It was completely unfavourable and deplorable political activities of the so-called major political parties and their leaders at a time when the nation and the people were and are being badly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.    Hundreds of p eople are dying of COVID-19 pandemic due to lack of oxygen and proper medication in both the government and private hospitals. Had the governments sincerely fulfiiled Dr. KC's demands, many innocent lives could be saved.       Dr.Govind KC staged dozen plus fast-onto-death hunger strikes asking...

Nation on the verge of downfall?

Nation on the verge of downfall? The in-house insensible tug of war for political power among the senior leaders in the then Nepal Communist Party (NCP) was a shameful political act that made them split into different splinter groups and continues to directly or indirectly effect the nation and the people in many ways. This is completely unfavourable and deplorable political activities of the so-called major political parties and their leaders at a time when the nation and the people are completely affected by the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic.    What is and where is wrong in our political system? Is it the party and its leaders who play self-centred and unproductive politics? Is it the voters who blindly vote their leaders? Is it the lack of political awareness of the people about the political system? Are the leaders insincere towards their social responsibilities? Are the senior leaders of major political parties foreign agents as blamed by political critics?...

Fighting the pandemic

The Himalayan Times 6 May 2021 Fighting the pandemic It was wonderful to learn that the Oli-led government is determined to fight against the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic that has gripped the nation and has been taking human lives by using all its available resources “Oli plans to combat COVID on war footing” (THT, 4 May, Page 1). It has been pleasant news to know that the Oli government has finally awoken from its deep slumber of almost one year when the first wave of COVID-19 had badly hit the nation. The government was heavily criticised by all walks of life for its poor management in dealing with the pandemic.    Addressing the nation two days ago, PM Oli said the new building of Bir Hospital, Tri Chandra Military Hospital, medical colleges of Kathmandu and big government, and private hospitals would be operated as COVID-19 hospitals. All the medical colleges and big hospitals located at the provincial level would be converted into COVID-19 hospitals...
